My girlfriend, one of my closest friends and I recently enjoyed a 7 night getaway in Tulum, Mexico. About an hour and a half from the Cancun airport, Tulum is a relaxed beachtown in the state of Quintana Roo. We chose to go with a home rental rather than a hotel because we thought the extra room and kitchen space would be beneficial to keeping costs down and staying under budget. What an amazing decision!
But what was truly amazing about this vacation is that after a busy day snorkeling, diving, biking and exploring the adorable town of Tulum, you can lounge around your spectacular penthouse oasis to swim, relax and rejuvenate for the next adventure.
WHERE AND HOW MUCH
We stayed in a modern 2 bedroom penthouse in Aldea Zama. Aldea Zama is a an upscale community of condos, gated communities and a couple restaurants. It’s up and coming, so what’s built is gorgeous but you’re surrounded by the construction of future real estate. This particular gem holds 5 people, two in each king bed and one on the couch. It has a bathroom in each room and a guest bathroom in the main area. We paid $1663 CAD for 7 nights, at $237.57 a night making it $79.20 pp per night. Add more people and it will be even cheaper! This was a perfect fit for our budget without sacrificing comfort. We booked at a demanding time, so I believe prices vary and it could very well be cheaper! Check current prices for your dates here.
CHECK IN AND OUT
The penthouse is self check in, you will be given the entry code 24 hours before your stay. We arrived to Cancun on a late flight, so self-check in was ideal for us. The front door has a electronic keypad on it that confused us at first but we were given an instructional video from the host that helped a lot! Check out is for 11am but due to a late flight, our wonderful host Karla allowed us to have a late check out of 3pm.
Everything was just as pictured. The bedrooms, bathrooms, and kitchen were spotless and looked virtually untouched. What caught my eye immediately would be the abundance of natural light from the large windows. Just out the apartment door is another entrance with a spiraling concrete staircase leading to a phenomenal rooftop pool terrace, equipped with tanning chairs and a full bar area.
ADVICE FOR YOUR STAY
Walk around the neighborhood (Aldea Zama), it’s very peaceful and has some pretty cool architecture you can look at. Go visit the restaurants that are in walking distance and meet locals and property owners, or buy the hardworking construction workers some beer!
If you don’t have a rental vehicle or bike, find a reliable cab your first day. You can ask for their card so from here you can text them to come grab you whenever it’s needed. We used the texting app, whatsapp.
Spend time relaxing on the rooftop pool, bring a portable speaker so you can enjoy some music but remember to be respectful of your neighbors and of Karla, the host.
If you’re a drinker, the fresh market beside the complex sells alcohol until 9.
Learn some spanish before you go. Most people are fluent in english but don’t expect everyone to be, the least you can do is prepare!
